After studying it for more than twenty years, the evening sky in New Mexico is still no less strange than my strangest hallucination.

Mom coming to the house the day Sofia was born, helping me clean the vernix from her, giving her a cursory—grandmotherly—headto-toe physical exam. Saying of her granddaughter’s vulva, “Now that doesn’t look right. You’ll need to have that checked out right away.” My heart stopping. The wheels in Mom’s mind turning: “But of course as a mother of two boys I don’t know a thing about little girls’ anatomies.”

Mom coming to the house to play with Jackson, asking permission to enroll him in a yoga class for toddlers: “Last week I noticed he’s only using one side of his body. One whole side of him isn’t active. As if one side of him is slightly paralyzed. His left side, I think.” My heart stopping. Mom playing with him a while, calling out from his room, “Forget that yoga class idea! Both sides of his body are working great!”
